Soy Candles vs. Regular Candles: What's Actually Better?

If you've ever stood in the candle aisle wondering whether "soy" is just marketing, you're not alone. Here's a straight, no-hype breakdown of how soy candles compare to regular (paraffin) candles — and which is actually worth your money.

What's the difference?

Regular candles are usually made from paraffin, a petroleum byproduct. Soy candles are made from soybean oil, a renewable plant source. That single difference drives almost everything else — how they burn, how long they last, and what they put into the air of your home.

Burn time: soy lasts longer

Soy wax has a lower melting point, so it burns slower and cooler. In practice, a soy candle can last 30–50% longer than a paraffin candle of the same size. So even though soy candles sometimes cost a little more upfront, you often get more hours per dollar.

Cleaner burn

Paraffin can release more soot and leave black marks on the jar and nearby walls. Soy burns cleaner with less soot, which is part of why so many people switch once they notice the difference. Pair soy with a wood wick and you also get a soft crackle and an even melt pool.

Scent throw

This is the one area where it's a real trade-off. Paraffin holds and throws synthetic fragrance a bit more aggressively, so it can fill a large room fast. Soy's scent is often described as softer and more true-to-life — it builds gently rather than hitting you at the door. For bedrooms, bathrooms, and wind-down time, most people prefer the softer soy throw.

The bottom line

If you want a longer, cleaner burn and a gentler scent, soy wins — especially for the kind of relaxing, everyday-ritual candles you keep by the bath or the bed. If you specifically need to scent a very large space quickly, a paraffin candle still has an edge.

Our candles are hand-poured with 100% soy wax and wood wicks, and topped with crystals for good measure — like Harvest Moon and Witch Woods. Browse the full lineup in our Self-Care collection.
